Why We Should Eliminate Federal Income Tax

Ah, the income tax. There's countless CPA's and law firms that give you all sorts of tax advice. For good reason. The federal tax code alone, together with all regulations, rulings and guidance is some 75,000 pages long. So you need a good attorney or CPA to help you understand what your legal obligations are and make sure you can save a few dollars when you can. Has anyone read all 75,000 pages?

But me, I am a thinker, and a dreamer. When I see a problem, I don't ask how to comply with it. I ask myself how it could be fixed. I wish we could find a way to just make things...simpler. I am a simple person. I like to walk my dog, play golf, play my guitar. I don't like filing a 200+ page tax return to the federal government and reporting all my personal information. What businesses I own. How much money I made. What assets I own. This is only normal because it has been this way for so long. Isn't government supposed to protect and serve us? Why does it feel like our government is against us?

But here's my idea. It's a crazy, radical idea. Our tax law doesn't have to be this way. I'll take it a step further. Our tax law shouldn't be this way.

In fact, it wasn't always this way for our country. It's ironic that a country that calls itself the land of the free has more tax rules (and probably rules in general) than any other nation. It's pathetic that a country that once rebelled against tyranny to gain it's independence and shouted "no taxation without representation" has now succumbed to tax rules so complex that our early founding fathers would have literally shed blood were it the British monarchy imposing the same rules on us today.

And in fact, the federal taxing regime was not always this way. In 1913, our government ratified the Sixteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. This amendment gave Congress the authority to levy a tax on personal income without apportioning it and marks the beginning of federal taxation monstrosity as we know it today.

I don't think it's enough to point out a problem. You have to have a solution. Thankfully, I have one. Simply amend the U.S. Constitution. Let's change the rules. The 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution would read as follows:

"The 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is hereby repealed and replaced in its entirety as follows: Congress shall not have any power to tax the citizens of the United States in any manner whatsoever, except as expressly set forth in this amendment. Congress may impose a sales tax on goods and services with a maximum tax rate of Five Percent (5.00%) on gross sales of goods and services per year by an individual or business entity. Remittance of the sales tax shall be voluntary and paid bi-annually. Failure to pay the federal sales tax shall not in any event be a crime but may be subject to interest and penalties for failure to pay as Congress may impose from time to time. Any taxation beyond that specifically set forth in this amendment is purely voluntary and shall be paid in the sole discretion of each citizen as they deem appropriate."

I am starting to feel more free already. So, what would it take to make this happen and not just a dream? Just more people. I am one person. We need millions.
